Dear Coding Roundtable Colleagues:
AHIMA Coding Summit July 20, 2008
I just got back from the AHIMA Coding Summit in
Chicago. Like every Coding Summit, the attendees are all Coding
Roundtable Coordinators for their CSAs and share a wealth of
information regarding coding roundtable activities in their
state. I couldn’t write fast enough as they were reeling off
all the things they did this past year! Needless to say, I have
a lot of information to share with you during the coming months!
One of the important activities of the Summit is
to work on the 2008-2009 Strategic Plan for coding roundtables.
I have attached the Strategic Plan for Advancing Coding Practice
created by AHIMA. It will be updated to reflect MHIMA’s
specific goals and published at a later date. Stay tuned!
MHIMA Coding Roundtable Audio conference
conducted June 24, 2008
There were 25 phone lines on our call
representing coders from all parts of the state, all types of
practices--hospital inpatient/outpatient, physician practices,
regulatory agencies, payers—a wonderful variety. We sent out
materials in advance and reviewed some scenarios from CodeWrite,
discussed questions sent in by the attendees in advance and
reviewed the references available to coders through AHIMA. The
format of the audio conference seems to work but I am open to
suggestions. Looking forward to the next roundtable---date to
be determined.
Eastern Missouri HIMA Coding Roundtable planned
for Saturday, August 2, 2008
EHIMA is having their annual coding roundtable
from 8am-noon on August 2 at St John’s Mercy Medical Center in
Creve Coeur. Always a fun and educational event! Gives
everyone a chance to network and exchange good coding stories.

AHIMA Communities of Practice
As always, I encourage you
to visit the AHIMA Communities of Practice related to coding. There
are several to choose from, depending on your
setting—inpatient/outpatient hospital, physician practice, etc.
There is a wealth of information that can help you in your coding
activities.
MHIMA’s Commitment
MHIMA continues in their
effort to provide members educational opportunities and is committed
to supporting our Coding Roundtable activities. A highlight of
being involved in the Coding Roundtable initiative will be the AHIMA
Coding Roundtable Summit in Chicago in July. MHIMA is anxious to
share our success stories with the Coding Roundtable Coordinators
from around the country.
Search for MHIMA Coding Roundtable Coordinator
I assumed my role as one of the MHIMA Delegates
on July 1, 2008. Because of this, MHIMA will be looking for a
new project manager to assume the responsibilities of the Coding
Roundtable Coordinator position. If you or someone you know
are interested in taking over this role, please let Ruth Koch,
MHIMA Director of Education know. It is very rewarding and I
encourage you to consider volunteering. Don’t hesitate to
contact me if you have any questions about the position.
