The Health Information Management profession is facing an educator
shortage. Research shows that there are HIM professionals who are
interested in making a career change from practice to academia, but they are
not sure how to go about it. This session will focus on what it means to be
an educator. Topics covered will include the academic environment (public
vs. private, 4-year vs. 2-year); the pros and cons of "academic life"; and
the various roles of a faculty member, including teaching, advising, service
and research. There will be discussion on the steps that a practitioner
might want to consider if they decide to become an educator.

A new issue brief from the California HealthCare Foundation
explores federal and state laws governing health information privacy as they
relate to mental health and substance abuse treatment. “A Delicate Balance:
Behavioral Health, Patient Privacy, and the Need to Know” presents three
scenarios illustrating some of the challenges in finding the right balance
between privacy and disclosure. To help reconcile the competing interests
involved, the authors recommend that healthcare providers give mental health
and substance abuse patients the technological tools to grant disclosure.
They also propose that providers ensure that such patients are truly
informed about the potential implications of not permitting their personal
information to be released to other health professionals. To read more, go

A new study from the Deloitte Center for
Health Solutions finds that better coordination of in-home medical treatment
and technological advances can dramatically improve care and drastically
reduce cost. “Connected Care: Technology-enabled Care at Home” promotes
self-care and an electronically connected patient-physician relationship as
the foundation of a new model of healthcare, one designed to put more
emphasis on prevention and the seamless coordination of medical treatment,
rather than reacting to preventable chronic illness and the subsequent
expense. Effectively applying in-home technologies via the connected care
model would lead to increased medication adherence, a reduction in avoidable
post-acute complications, and an improvement in self-care management of
chronic conditions. The eventual net result, the study projects, could be an
annual savings of 20 percent or more, a potential $400 billion savings to
the US healthcare system.

Do you know someone in HIM who is deserving of recognition
at the national level? If so, help Missouri be represented
nationally by nominating an MHIMA member for one of the 2008
AHIMA Triumph Awards.
Triumph Award winners are individuals who demonstrate their
dedication to the HIM community through their excellent work and service.
These individuals are right here among us – we can identify them if we just
take a few minutes to look around.
Nomination guidelines for a specific award can be found in
this link:
http://www.ahima.org/fore/professional/awards.asp.
To make the process easier, MHIMA has assembled a project
team to coordinate the nominations. Nominations should be submitted to
the MHIMA project team by May 15, 2008 for submission to AHIMA by the June
2, 2008 deadline.
