The
Missouri Health Information Management Association concluded its 56th
Annual Meeting on May 2 with motivational speaker, Tony Ruesing. His
presentation was the last in a three day series of well-rounded sessions
that covered a wide variety of topics ranging from coding, auditing and CPT
compliances, legal EHR, preparation for the BIG test, HIPAA update,
transcription issues, RHIOs, health record banking, EHR implementation for
small to mid-sized hospitals, and emergency healthcare for motor vehicle
crash victims.
Thirty-two vendors presented the latest in technology, and
the flamingo lagoon and silent auction raised money for scholarships.
Many thanks to the 260 registered attendees who helped to
make this year’s meeting a success.
We hope to see you again next year in Osage Beach.
Thanks
to the MHIMA Board members for cash donations and items: Julie Wolter,
Jeff McGraw, Ruth Koch, Karen Gambon, Jennifer Melvin, Michelle Kornfeld,
and Sharon Farley.
Thanks to the following for their generous donations:
Poney Express HIMA, Eastern Missouri HIMA, Ozark HIMA, and
Kansas City HIMA,
Marsha Dolan and Linda Courtney, St. Louis University HIM
department, Stephens College SGCE, Dee Bloomquist, Mid-Continent Coding,
Gabrielle Farley Scott, and Georgia Schwartz.
Through their generous donations there was a great variety
of items that provided a day of lively bidding activity that ended in a
dramatic countdown at 4:00 p.m. with the winning bidders donations totaling
$1,076.50.
In addition, there was lots of willing participants who
donated dollars to choose floating pink flamingo dink coasters from a mini
lagoon in order to win either a wrapped gift or their very own pink flamingo
drink coaster. This activity raised another $133.00.
Thanks to all who participated.
Special thanks to those who helped work and set-up the area
during the two days, Amy Easton, Sharon McClintock, Karen Gambon, Teresa
Knox, Clark Chaffin, Jeff McGraw, Marie Himmel, and Darla Branda.

This
year, we decided to try something different at the Annual Meeting. Instead
of presenting the awards and scholarships at the Business Meeting, we tried
presenting them at the President’s Reception on Thursday evening. I think
it was a nice change; we could take a little more time to honor our
recipients without worrying about the time constraints of finishing the
Business Meeting so we could get to our sessions on time.
If you were at the Annual Meeting, I would
be interested in your feedback regarding this. Is this a good thing we
should continue or should we go back to presenting them at the Business
Meeting?
For those who could not attend the meeting, here is a list
of the award/scholarship winners:
Outstanding HIM Volunteer: Maggie Gambill
Outstanding HIM Educator: Darla Branda
Outstanding HIM Booster: Ann Nowlin
Distinguished Service Award: Mary Jellinek
Student Scholarships:
Saint Louis University: Jordan Roszhart
Ozarks Technical Community College: Cheryl Wolf
Penn Valley Community College: Steven Wilson
Stephens College: Martha Hale
I would like to thank those who took the time to nominate
someone and encourage those who didn’t to nominate someone next year.
This year, I am also serving on the FORE
Triumph Awards Committee for AHIMA. The FORE Triumph Awards are national
awards designed to recognize those special individuals who have made a
difference in the HIM profession.
You can learn more and nominate someone here:
http://www.ahima.org/fore/professional/awards.asp
Nominations are due by June 2, 2008.
Think about who you can nominate.
Have a great summer.

One of AHIMA’s primary advocacy goals for its 2008 Hill Day
was to increase support for HR 4105, the “Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor
Moratorium Act.” To continue our effort, we are requesting that all AHIMA
members visit the action center of the Advocacy Assistant at
https://secure.ahima.org/DC/Login.asp and send a letter to your
congressional representative in support of HR 4105.
An action alert is
already active on the site; simply select it, review the alert, edit the
letter (if you wish), enter your contact information and hit send. HR 4105
was introduced by Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) in response to problems identified
in the Medicare RAC pilot programs in California, Florida, and New York
which have not been resolved in spite of complaints from these three states
and the industry. AHIMA fears that without evaluation and resolution of
these problems, healthcare providers will suffer significant costs due to
the administrative problems caused by the RAC program and the Medicare
program.
Effective July 1, 2008, the eligibility period for testing
for all AHIMA examinations will change from six months to four months. This
is being done to encourage eligible candidates to take the exam sooner
rather than later, as many students are more likely to do well on the exam
shortly after their course work. Candidates who are currently eligible to
test will NOT be affected by this change. However, candidates whose
applications are processed after, or on July 1, 2008, will have four months
to take their exam.

This month we are honoring the 2008 Annual
Meeting Planning Committee for all their hard work in putting such a great
meeting together! Congratulations and thank you to Ruth Koch, Barb Beckett,
Erin Sweeney, Linda Courtney, Lucy Sweiger, Sharon
Farley, Lisa Molinaro, Julie Wise, Amy Eastin, Mary Jellinek and Marsha
Dolan.
If you are making a gift in honor of a
friend or colleague in HIM, a mentor, a co-worker, or a classmate, don't
forget to request your FORE Shooting Star pin when you make a gift. The gold
lapel pin is for you to present to your honoree in recognition of all they
contribute to the HIM profession. Each Shooting Star pin is $25 and can be
mailed directly to you to present to your honoree or (at your request) FORE
can mail it to the individual on your behalf.
