 President's Message

This is such a wonderful and very busy time of year.  I have just finished entering my grades for the semester.  As I sat back to relax I realized my office is a disaster.  There always seems to be something that needs to be done either here at work or at home.  But, I am going to put all that aside for the next week and enjoy my family.

So, however you celebrate the holiday season, I wish for you love, happiness, peace and fun.

Enjoy time with your family and friends.  See you in 2008!

Julie Wolter, MA, RHIA
President, MoHIMA

CMS Announces Deeming Authority for Critical
Access Hospitals

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced that the American Osteopathic Association will be recognized as a national accreditation program for critical access hospitals seeking to participate in the Medicare or Medicaid programs (72FR65738). The effective date for this recognition is December 28, and recognition lasts through December 28, 2013. More information can be found in the November 23 Federal Register at http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fedreg/a071123c.html.

AHIMA Highlighted in Chicago Tribune Article

On December 11, AHIMA was recognized in both the print and online versions of the Chicago Tribune for championing the importance of establishing and maintaining a personal health record. AHIMA’s public relations staff noted that individuals must be the stewards of their own information because “you are the only person who has your whole health picture.” In the article AHIMA also recommended establishing a list of current medications and dosages, known allergies, and emergency and physician contact numbers. The full text of the article is available at http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/lifestyle/chi-1211_health_record_rdec11,0,3358795.story.

Harvard Study Questions Future of Regional
Health Data Exchanges

A new study published in Health Affairs notes that clinical data exchange is far from a reality. The study of 145 regional health information organizations (RHIOs) found that only 20 were of at least modest size and exchanging clinical data. Only 15 RHIOs were exchanging clinical data across a range of patient populations. The study’s authors noted that new funding sources are needed to offset the significant startup expenses. However, there are successful RHIOs operating under the pay for performance model.

Honor a Colleague with a Shooting Star

If you are making a gift in honor of a friend or colleague in HIM, a mentor, a co-worker, or a classmate, don't forget to request your Foundation Shooting Star pin when you make a gift. The gold lapel pin is for you to present to your honoree in recognition of all they contribute to the HIM profession. Each Shooting Star pin is $25 and can be mailed directly to you to present to your honoree or (at your request) Foundation can mail it to the individual on your behalf.
