My Fellow MoHIMA Members,
This summer has been very eventful! To begin with, AHIMA is undergoing significant changes with a new Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan. During the MoHIMA transition meeting in June, the board voted to amend MoHIMA’s Mission and Vision to help align with AHIMA. We also are using a new format for a strategic plan/workplan this year. We feel this new format will help ensure the board stays on task with our projects this year.
Many members have shared frustration and concern with the direction AHIMA has taken over the last few weeks, months and years. Some of those concerns were addressed at the AHIMA Leadership Symposium in July. During this meeting, additional information was provided regarding AHIMA’s progress with the new strategic plan, and it was shared that we should expect some significant positive changes in the coming months. Earlier this year, AHIMA underwent internal assessments that have helped create roadmaps to improve key operational areas such as customer service. Work on a professional enhancement campaign is underway that will help further promote our profession to the industry. Finally, alliances with other associations including AMIA and AHCA are ensuring AHIMA is at the forefront of how information is used to transform health and healthcare.
During times of change, it can be difficult to trust our leadership when so much of the information is unknown. To help ensure ongoing communication and transparency, MoHIMA board members will continue to provide updates at regional meetings this year. We will also continue to communicate through e-blasts and social media platforms. Finally, through our various roles on AHIMA workgroups and as Delegates, we will advocate for you. Our actions as board members are not enough though to help during this transformative time for AHIMA. YOUR engagement as a member is needed as well. Both our state and national association need YOU to volunteer on committees, practice councils, and taskforces. We need YOU to author articles and respond to questions/comments on the Engage communities. We need YOU to speak up and continue to advocate for our profession. Borrowing from Gandhi, “Be the change you want to see in the world” or in this case, be the change you want to see in YOUR ASSOCIATION.
Our year will continue to be eventful. Your 2019-2020 MoHIMA board are passionate and dedicated professionals. Some of our plans for the year include member education through in-person meetingsand webinars, advocacy efforts, regional association engagement, and membership recognition. Our coding roundtable coordinator, Kay Piper, continues to travel throughout our state speaking at the regional association meetings. You can expect more coding roundtable calls and continued quality education this next year.
We also hope to expand our social media footprint to better communicate information to you. If you do not already follow MoHIMA on LinkedIn, Twitter or Facebook, I challenge you do to so, and use those platforms as a means to spark conversation with other HIM professionals.
In closing, I look forward to an exciting and transformative year. It is truly an honor to serve as your MoHIMA President and I look forward to meeting many of you throughout the year.
Yours in Service,
Deanna Peterson, MHA, RHIA, CHPS, LNHA
MoHIMA 2019-2020 President
